June is birthday month for me. It brings with it a plethora (one of my many favorite words) of emotions which range from fear of fleeting time and youthful appearances to smiles wistfully brought by memories. Emotions are necessary. Popes to politicians, educators to equestrians, and wedding planners to writers all need emotions or they dry up.
The Emotion Thesaurus, A Writer’s Guide to Character Expression by Angela Ackerman and Becca Puglisi is like a glass of cold water, a roof from the storm, a seven course French dinner served after nine in a lovely garden…some of my many necessities. The table of contents, useful tips, even the recommended reading list bring forth an emotional response from my characters encompassing a few lessons learned. Each of the numerous emotions covered present the reader with amazing categories such as physical signals, internal sensations, mental responses, and long term cues for the reader to dive into the world behind a character’s wizard-curtain.
Enough. I don’t want to get too emotional.
Happy Birthday to me.
